“It’s a great opportunity and I’m really looking forward to getting started and building the team,” said Briggs on Tuesday (September 10). “When The Hundred was first announced I was struck by how it was different from the IPL and the Big Bash and I thought it was a great idea to create something different from those tournaments, rather than attempt to compete with them.”
The Grimsby-born coach is the current coach of the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia. Previously, she was the coach of Loughborough Lightning from 2016 to 2018 and led the team to Women’s Cricket Super League finals for the first time in 2016.
During her stint with those teams she has worked with several international superstars like Amy Satterthwaite, Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight, Smriti Mandhana and Hayley Matthews.
“Since then you look at the coaches who are getting involved – and it looks as if the best players want to be involved as well – and it just feels like we’re set to be involved in a really good competition,” Briggs said.
Briggs joins Charlotte Edwards, Lisa Keightley and Danielle Hazell as the fourth woman to be put in-charge of the teams in The Hundred, beginning in July 2020.
The tournament will feature eight city-based clubs ‑ Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff, Southampton and two in London (Lord’s and the Oval).
