Bad… Weird… Different… Wonder which word aptly describes 2020. The year gone by was unusual with all activities, including sports, coming to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a year in which women’s cricket was expected to attain greater heights especially after the incredible high of the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup at the MCG on March 8.
Of the 86,174 present at the ‘G that day and those who watched the telecast, who would have thought that it would be the last international match in women’s cricket for the next five months. Cancelled and postponed were the terms that were used in the ensuing days.
Austria and Germany then became the first teams to resume international cricket with a five-game series in August followed by Australia, England, West Indies and New Zealand a month later. 2020 was a year which saw very less international cricket.
After the success of the T20 World Cup, Cricket Australia went on to add another feather to its cap by successfully organising a full-fledged WBBL in five venues across Sydney.
These were some of the highlights of the year gone by. In this episode of the Clean Bowled Podcast, I’m joined by my co-host Ananya Upendran and colleague Gomesh S to discuss and reflect upon the year gone by.
