All-round performance from Laura Delany and Robyn Searle helped Typhoons register their first win in the Super 50 Cup. Thanks to their efforts Typhoons beat Dragons by 17 runs at the Hollywood Cricket Club in Belfast on Sunday (July 31).

Put into bat by Dragons after Leah Paul won the toss, Typhoons were sedate to start with Celeste Raack and Searle adding 48 runs for the opening wicket. After Mary Waldron gave some impetus to the innings, Delany walked in at number four and didn’t take much time to get going. In the 28th over, she hit Cara Murray for a couple of boundaries and then didn’t look back from there.

Delany shared a 34-run partnership with Searle before the South African got out for 45 off 91 balls. With the platform being set, the Ireland skipper played a stroke-filled innings to take Typhoons to a competitive total. When her side finished on 233 for 9, Delany remained unbeaten on 83 0ff 72 balls.

For Dragons, wicket-keeper Amy Hunter affected four run outs, while five bowlers picked up one wicket apiece.

In the chase, Paul and Sarah Forbes started strongly with 71 runs for the opening wicket. The breakthrough came for Typhoons in terms of a run out with Waldron sending Paul back for 30 in the 16th over. Delany removed the dangerous Hunter in the next over for just two.

However, Forbes found an aggressive partner in Orla Prendergast and the the allrounder kept going for her shots. The pair added 82 runs for the third wicket with Prendergast striking at well over 100 to make 57 off 47. Although Raack accounted for Prendergast, Arlene Kelly and Forbes looked set to take Dragons towards the target.

With the score reading 205 for 3 in the 40th over, Dragons were in the driving seat when Searle removed Forbes for 65. Once the opener went, they kept losing wickets and with Kelly falling as the eighth wicket, Typhoons came back strongly in the match to bowl Dragons out for 216.

For Typhoons, Searle was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 32, while Delany’s frugal spell saw her pick up 2 wickets for just 14 runs.

Brief Scores: Typhoons 233/9 in 50 overs (Laura Delany 83*, Robyn Searle 45; Zara Craig 1/18) beat Dragons 216/10 in 43 overs (Sarah Forbes 65, Orla Prendergast 57; Robyn Searle 4/32, Laura Delany 2/14) by 17 runs
