Dragons dominate Round 1 of the Ireland Super 3s

The Toyota Super 3’s Series is the peak domestic cricket competition for women’s cricket in Ireland. It features three squads – Scorchers, Typhoons and Dragons - that play a series of 20-over and 50-over matches between May and September each year.

Round 1 was played on 19th May at North Kildare.

Match 1

Scorchers vs Dragons

Scorchers captain Kavanagh won the toss and elected to field first. Recently appointed in ICC's Development Panel of Umpires, Mary Waldron and Tomlinson opened the batting for the Dragons. Waldron was bowled on the third delivery of the match for 0 by Irish International Lucy O'Reilly. Tomlinson and the skipper Garth added 39 runs for the second wicket. Tomlinson was dismissed by Little for 13. Little picked up her second wicket when she dismissed Garth for 22.

Helped by some wayward bowling by Scorchers who gave away 28 extra runs in wides, the Dragons posted a total of 109 in 20 overs.

Chasing 110 to win, Scorchers made a decent start with 41-1 after 8 overs. In the 11th over they lost their wicket as the opener Stokell fell for 25 with 52 runs on board. McCann (13) and Sophie MacMahon (15) put up some resistance by adding 23 runs for the fourth wicket to take the score to 75. However rest of the batting could not cope up with the pressure and the inning was wrapped up at 92.

Irish international Lara Maritz was pick of the bowlers as she claimed 3-9 from 4 overs, aided by two wickets apiece by Delaney and Canning.

The Dragons won the match by 17 runs.

 

Match 2

Scorchers vs Typhoons

In the second match of the fixture Typhoons led by the national skipper Laura Delany met Scorchers. Scorchers had already lost the first match in the day.

Typhoons won the toss and elected to bat first. Hannah Little gave Scorchers an early breakthrough when she dismissed Little and Paul for 8 and 6 respectively and restricted Typhoons to 2-31. The skipper Delany and the opener Raymond-Hoey put up a solid 65 run partnership. At the score of 96, O'Reilly broke the partnership as she dismissed Delany for 32.

Scorchers bowling was wayward in the second match running as they conceded 25 extra runs. Typhoons posted a total of 116-6. Raymond-Hoey remained unbeaten on 39 whereas Little and MacMahon were pick of the bowlers for Scorchers with two wickets each.

Chasing 117 for win, Scorchers lost their first wicket early. Walsh gave two back to back blows to Scorchers when she removed Stokell and Kavanagh at the same score. MacMahon launched a counterattack with 38 runs off 32 deliveries. When she departed with the score of 81, rest of the batters could reach to 95-8.

Delany picked up 3-15 as Typhoons won the match by 21 runs.

 

Match 3

Dragons vs Typhoons

In the final fixture of the day, both undefeated teams went head to head to claim the top spot at the end of Round 1.

Dragons won the toss and elected to bat first. Tomlinson and Waldron put up a solid partnership for the first wicket as they added 39 runs. Waldron found her rhythm and along with the skipper Garth she rotated the strike. The paid added 58 runs for the third wicket. Raack trapped Waldron leg before wicket for 48 at the score of 97. Dragons ended their inning with 112 on board.

Typhoons top three batters made a solid start as they were chasing 113 for the win. After the opening pair added 13 runs at the top, No. 3 batter Leah Paul built a solid 25 run partnership with Raymond-Hoey. Due to the disciplined bowling and fielding by Dragons, Typhoons found the runs extremely hard to come buy and managed to post a total of 88-6.

The Dragons won the match by 24 runs.

 

At the end of Round 1, Dragons lead by 4 points, followed by Typhoons with 2 points whereas Scorchers are yet to post a win.

Next rounds of T20 fixtures will be played on 23rd June, 29th June and 28th July.
