Ellyse Perry, the number ranked allrounder in the world and the ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2019, has added another feather to her cap. She has been named as one of the five cricketers of the decade by Wisden. To put things into perspective, Perry is the only women featuring in the list.
Perry has had a phenomenal run since making her debut for Australia in the year 2007. She has broken records for fun. In the year 2019 alone, she has amassed 783 runs and also took 28 wickets in 22 matches across formats. Perry also has a unique record of being the first player across genders to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is.
“Perry stands alone in being consistent throughout. Across the decade she has a Test batting average of 114.6 and a bowling one of under 17," wrote Wisden about Perry. "And these are the figures of a woman whose Test career has been limited to just eight Tests across a career spanning 11 years. A travesty, really.”
Her numbers in Tests are also remarkable. In the eight games that she has played so far, Perry has scored 624 runs which also includes a double-ton in the Ashes Down Under in 2017. The allrounder has also picked up 31 wickets in the format.
"That consistency, a word which many strive to achieve and which cricket, by its very nature, is designed to fell, is not only confined to crossing formats for Perry, but within them too," they said.
Steven Smith, Virat Kohli, Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers are the other four players of the decade as recognized by Wisden.
