Heather Knight ruled out of CWG 2022 and The Hundred due to hip injury
England have suffered a major blow as skipper Heather Knight has been ruled out of the ongoing Commonwealth Games due to a hip injury. The injury has also ruled out the possibility of her participating in the forthcoming season of The Hundred.
Knight sustained the injury in the first T20I against South Africa before the Commonwealth Games and has not recovered yet. England captain continues to receive the treatment for the same and will remain with England’s squad for the remainder of CWG 2022. Natalie Sciver will continue to lead the side in Knight’s absence. Since England can’t name a replacement for Knight, they will carry on their CWG 2022 campaign with a 14-member squad.
Earlier, Knight was rested in both the second and the third T20I against the Proteas in the recently culminated bilateral series as a precautionary measure ahead of England’s Commonwealth Games campaign.
She also couldn’t feature in any of the England’s first two matches in the CWG 2022 and Sciver led the team on both occasions, firstly against Sri Lanka and secondly against Suné Luus’ South Africa. England recorded a five-wicket win against Chamari Athapaththu’s side and then picked up a 26-run victory over South Africa.
However, Knight’s absence hasn’t hurt the team yet. England registered a clean sweep against South Africa in the three-match T20I series and are yet to be beaten in the ongoing tournament (CWG 2022). But given the stature of Knight, it is likely that the team will miss her services both as a leader and as a batter going ahead in the competition.
The fact that she won’t be seen in action during The Hundred is also a huge blow to London Spirit. Knight is not only the captain of London Spirit but is also one of their premier batters. Hence, Spirit are going to miss her badly once the tournament kickstarts.
