New Update
Super Smash 2021-22 when they beat Northern Brave at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Thursday (December 23). Despite a promising opening partnership, Brave fell 16-run short of Magicians’ score and succumbed to their fifth defeat from as many matches.
After Mackay won the toss and opted to bat, Magicians lost Natalie Cox early when Lauren Heaps accounted for her. With the score reading 22 for one in the fourth over, Mackay joined Satterthwaite and the duo added 43 for the second wicket. The latter was the more aggressive of the two and hit five boundaries during her knock.
The southpaw was eventually dismissed for 37 off 32 balls, but Lea Tahuhu continued her hitting form and smashed 22 from just nine balls to give Magicians the momentum they needed with Mackay playing the anchor role to perfection. By the time Mackay fell, they were on their way to a competitive total and ended the innings on 142 for six from the stipulated 20 overs.
In the chase, Brave looked on their way to reverse their disappointing results so far in the season with Kate Anderson and Caitlin Gurrey adding 63 runs for the opening wicket. In the ninth over, Mackay provided Magicians with the breakthrough when she ran Gurrey out for 29.

Despite the loss of her partner, Anderson took Brave to the three-figure mark with a well-made 49 off 42 balls. However, once they lost Brooke Halliday and Anderson in consecutive overs, Brave’s innings nosedived and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Eventually their innings finished on 126 for eight from their 20 overs.
For Magicians, Jacinta Savage was the most successful bowler with figures of two for 25, while Mackay’s frugal spell of one from 17 from her four overs was crucial in hampering Brave’s chase. Jessica Simmons, Melissa Banks and Satterthwaite also chipped in with one wicket apiece.
Brief Scores: Canterbury Magicians 142/6 in 20 overs (Frances Mackay 43, Amy Satterthwaite 37; Kate Anderson 1/10) beat Northern Brave 126/8 in 20 overs (Kate Anderson 49, Caitlin Gurrey 29; Jacinta Savage 2/25) by 16 runs
