The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Sunday (August 25), announced Fatima Sana as the new captain ahead of the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 which will take place in the UAE. The decision was made unanimously by the women's national selection committee. The board also announced the squad for the tournament.
The 22-year-old bowling all-rounder has featured in 40 T20Is and 41 ODIs, previously leading Pakistan's emerging and domestic sides. She also led the line for Pakistan in a famous ODI win against New Zealand in a Super Over at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch back in December 2023. She has been a standout performer for Pakistan with 31 T20I wickets at an average of 30.09. She has also scored 215 runs with the strike rate of just over 100.
Fatima will take over the captaincy from 37-year-old Nida Dar who replaced Bismah Maroof as the all-format captain. Nida, a veteran of 153 T20Is and 112 ODIs, has also been included in the side that has been clubbed with Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group A.
The selection committee has made only one change from the team that took part in the Women's Asia Cup 2024 back in July. Right-handed batter Sadaf Shamas, who was also part of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa, has made a comeback in the squad in place of wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi, who will travel with the side as a reserve player.
A total of ten players have been retained from the 2023 edition in South Africa. Meanwhile, uncapped left-arm pacer Tasmia Rubab makes it to the final 15. Left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal has been included in the squad subject to fitness.
