Ramesh Powar, who earlier was appointed as the interim coach of the Indian Women's team, has now been appointed as the Head Coach till ICC World T20 later this year. He was appointed as the interim coach by BCCI for the camp in the National Cricket Academy (NCA); after former coach Tushar Arothe stepped down from his position.
BCCI recently gave an advertisement for the post of Head Coach of women’s team after the resignation of Tushar Arothe. As per the news in Mumbai Mirror, Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji, CEO Rahul Johri and GM Saba Karim went through the applications. But they had to drop the process because of the confusion with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
As per the report in The Hindu, BCCI had shortlisted six candidates for the post of Head Coach. Former India player Mamatha Maben, Ramesh Powar, Sunil Joshi, Atul Bedade, Rajkumar Sharma (the childhood coach of Indian Captain Virat Kohli) and Sanath Kumar (the bowling coach of India U-19) made the list.
India will tour to Sri Lanka in September and with less than three months for the T20 World Cup, Board has decided to give the extension to Powar. The team is currently playing the T20 Challenger Trophy in Alur under his guidance. After that, they will attend a camp in Chennai before leaving for Sri Lanka, where they will play three ODIs and five T20Is. Later they will play a bilateral series in West Indies prior to the T20 World Cup.
Having made his debut in 2004, Powar played 31 ODIs and 2 Tests in his career. He was a consistent performer in domestic cricket and played first-class cricket for 16 years. He played for the Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL. In November 2015, he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
Powar has done Level-III coaching course from Australia but has no coaching experience. The upcoming Sri Lanka series will be his first assignment as the coach. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played from 9th November in the Caribbean. India is in the Group B alongside New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and Ireland.
