India B and India D won on opening day of U-19 One-Day Challenger

Anushka Sharma and Sonia Mendhiya continued their all-round performance to help India B and India D respectively to their second wins on day two of the Under-19 One-Day Challenger Trophy in Jaipur.

At the RCA Academy Ground, India B skipper Sharma – who scored 72 before taking a five-wicket haul in the opening game against India A – extended her impressive run in the season with yet another show with the bat and ball against India C. She opened the batting and scored 41 to finish as the joint top-scorer for her side along with C Shushanthika.

Both the batters scored 41 to take India B to 198 before they were bowled out in the final over their innings. Sharma and Shushanthika shared a 77-run partnership for the second wicket after they lost last match’s centurion G Trisha early.

For India C, Sakshi S Thakur took three wickets for 26 runs, while Uttarakhand Under-19 skipper Pooja Raj accounted for two wickets.

In reply, except for Aaradhana D Bisht, none of the India C batters could stay at the crease for long as India B bowlers continued to make merry for the second day in a row. Sharma picked up the big wicket of Subhra Swain as well as that of Mithila Vinod. India C fell way short of the target and eventually went down by 80 runs.

For India B, apart from Sharma, N R Shree Charani also picked up two wickets as India C could score only 118 for the loss of eight wickets from their fifty overs.

Over at the K L Saini Stadium, opting to bat first, India A were provided with a good platform by Roshni Kiran and Aishmine Kaur despite the loss of an early wicket. The duo added 51 runs for the second wicket.

However, Neelam Bhardwaj broke the partnership for India D with the wicket of Kiran with the score reading 66 for two in the 16th over. Post that, Mendhiya struck twice to remove opposition skipper Chandasi Krisnamurthy and Srilekha Roy for single digit scores.

From there, Soumya Verma’s 48 helped India A to finish on 187 for five from the stipulated fifty overs. Kiran with 36 and Kaur with 41 were the other two prominent scorers.

For India D, Mendhiya finished her ten overs with figures of two for 37.

In the chase, even though they lost Shewata Sawant early, Mendhiya batted solidly to take their score over the three-figure mark. In the process, she scored her fifty from 81 balls.

Although, Mendhiya fell with India D score reading 127 for five in the 35th over, A K Garg and Raghvi Bisht took them over the line in the penultimate over. Both remained unbeaten on 29 and 34 respectively.
