During the first edition of Khangchendzonga tournament in 2020, committees were formed to create teams for women players from the state with an eye on having adequate number of squads to form a club tournament.
Khangchendzonga Shield was the first-ever women’s T20 tournament in the state organised by SICA in Rangpo. 63 women cricketers participated in the four-team event that saw Team Pandim winnning the title.
2022 edition will be the first official club based event in the state and the eight teams - Alpine Sporting Club, Aakraman Sporting Club, Cricket Association of Tathangchen (CAT), Denzong Girls Cricket Club (DGCC), HRCC Namchi, Jorethang Irises Cricket Club, Pakyong District Club, Yuksom Capitals - will compete against each other.
ALSO READ: The need of club culture in India – Sikkim show the way In a statement, SICA thanked all the members and clubs for making the competition possible despite the challenges possessed by the second way of COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the report, Senior women’s coach Amosh Rai and Nayan Tshering Bhutia will mentor all the participating clubs and they will also be holding weeklong camps in all districts ahead of the tournament. The teams won’t be sponsored completely by SICA this year marking a change from the inaugural edition.
