Sri Lanka have announced a 19-member squad for the upcoming India series comprising of six limited over matches – three T20Is and three ODIs – on Monday (June 20). Chamari Athapaththu will continue to lead the side.

Young prodigy Vishmi Gunaratne has been named in the side along with Rashmi de Silva, Malsha Shehani, Tharika Sewwandi, Kaushani Nuthyangana, and Sathya Sandeepani. Gunaratne missed out on the Pakistan tour due to school exams, while Rashmi, Shehani, Sewwandi and Sandeepani were named as standbys for that tour.

From the squad the visited Pakistan, Prasadani Weerakkody has been dropped, while Imesha Dulani and Sachini Nisansala won’t be part of the side against India due to injuries, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in the release.

16-year-old Gunaratne had impressed everyone with her performances during the Sri Lanka Club Division tournament. She already has played four T20Is, having made her debut in the Commonwealth Games Qualifiers earlier this year, when Sri Lanka won the tournament to qualify for the Birmingham Games 2022.

Sri Lanka had a tough time during the Pakistan tour as they lost five of the six matches they played, but Athapaththu’s century in the final ODI helped them finish the tour on a high.

Harmanpreet Kaur has taken over the captaincy of the India ODI side with Mithali Raj announcing her retirement from international cricket. When India visited the island nation the last time in 2018, they won the T20I-leg 4-0 and managed to win the ODI series 2-1. Just like the last tour, the ODIs will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship. Veteran Jhulan Goswami is also not part of the tour having last appeared for India during the World Cup 2022.

India’s T20I side has a familiar look with Jemimah Rodrigues making a return after missing out on a place during the one-off T20I against New Zealand before the World Cup 2022 along with Radha Yadav. Allrounder Sneh Rana has been rested from the tour according to head coach Ramesh Powar and is currently undergoing fitness training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

The T20I series will start on June 23 and will be played at 2:00 PM local time, while the ODIs will begin from July 1 and will conclude with the final ODI on July 7. All the 50-over games will start from 10:00 AM local time.
