All-round Jess Watkin helped Central Hinds trump Northern Districts by 86 runs in the 11th match of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield on Sunday (November 21). Meanwhile, Canterbury Magicians bowlers held their nerve to get past Otago Sparks by seven runs (DL method) in a thrilling last-over finish.

For Magicians, the openers Frances Mackay and Abigale Gerken started well with the bat. Mackay made 25 runs from 32 balls, but Gerken went on to build partnerships with Amy Satterthwaite.

While Satterthwaite made 46 runs from 53 balls, the former scored a 128-ball 108 before getting out to Kate Ebrahim. Jacinta Savage smashed 61 runs from 65 balls, helping the Magicians finish with 282 for seven in 49 overs. Ebrahim took three for 45 in her seven overs.

Ebrahim went on to score a 78-ball 56, but it was Hayley Jensen and Katey Martin who kept the chase alive for the Sparks. After losing Jensen for 76 runs from 73 balls to Jessica Simmons, Katey Martin's fighting 60 from 65 balls went in vain as the Magicians won by seven runs.

Earlier, Hinds lost Emily Cunningham for eight runs from 12 balls. Natalie Dodd and Jess Watkin built a partnership, reviving the Hinds innings.

The former made a run-a-ball 22 before getting out to Lucy Boucher. Watkin kept the innings going at the other end, forging crucial partnerships with Kerry-Anne Tomlinson and Hannah Rowe.
