rain-affected match was reduced to
47 overs per side. The
day-night match was the second game of the
ICC Women’s Championship,
West Indies Women won the toss and elected to field first.
Nipuni Hansika and
Yashoda Mendis opened for the
Sri Lankans and their steady partnership added 53. On the final ball of the 11th over Yashoda Mendis, 34(32) got out to the bowling of Afy Flecther.
Nipuni Hansika 18(48),
Chamari Atapattu 31(34) and
Dilani Manodara 26(51) fought hard to shape the innings until the 36th over. Regular wickets were to lead to Sri Lanka not posting a decent total. From the lower order, only
Sripali Weerakkody 19(55) and
Rebeca Vandort 17(21) reached double figures. The pressure of setting a total meant that Sri Lanka couldn’t bat out 47 overs and fell short by 3 balls with a score of only 162 all out.
West Indian spin trio
Afy Fletcher,
Anisa Mohammed and
Stafanie Taylor grabbed 7 wickets in
29 overs for just
71 runs.
It wasn’t to be enough to trouble the West Indies batters who chased down the total with ease and took them only 39.4 overs and only lost only 3 wickets in the process. Their openers
Kycia Night 24(44) and
Hayley Matthews 25(48) added
49 runs for the first wicket.
Matthews had retired hurt in the first ODI but was fit enough to play in this match.
Stafanie Taylor 60(83) and
Deandra Dottin 37(38) played superb unbeaten knocks and were too good for Sri Lanka and won by 7 wickets with 44 balls spare.
Sri Lankan bowlers seemed helpless against the batting attack of West Indies and took only three wickets shared one each by
Chamari Atapattu,
Shashikala Siriwardene, and skipper
Inoka Ranaweera.
